What’s the Difference Between High-Functioning Autism and Asperger’s?
Categories
Autism

High-functioning autism (HFA) and Asperger’s Syndrome are both terms used to describe individuals on the autism spectrum who have average or above-average intelligence and relatively intact language skills. However, the key difference lies in the diagnostic history and specific traits.

Asperger’s Syndrome, once considered a separate diagnosis, is now categorized under autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the latest diagnostic manuals. Asperger’s typically involves social difficulties, narrow interests, and repetitive behaviors, but without significant language delays. People with Asperger’s often have average or above-average language development, but may struggle with social interactions and understanding social cues.

High-functioning autism is also used to describe individuals who are on the autism spectrum but can function independently in many areas of life. However, it often includes more varied traits and may involve some communication challenges or differences in behavior that are less pronounced than in other forms of autism.

While the distinction can be subtle, both conditions fall under the umbrella of autism spectrum disorder and benefit from similar interventions.
