Is Autism More Common Today Than It Was 20 Years Ago?

Yes, autism is diagnosed far more frequently today than it was 20 years ago. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), autism now affects about 1 in 36 children, compared to roughly 1 in 150 in the early 2000s.

However, this increase doesn’t necessarily mean autism itself is becoming more common. Experts believe the rise is largely due to better awareness, improved screening tools, and broader diagnostic criteria. In other words, more children are being accurately identified and getting the support they need earlier.

Society’s understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has also evolved. Conditions once diagnosed separately, like Asperger’s Syndrome, are now included under the autism spectrum. This has contributed to the higher reported rates.

While the numbers have grown, the positive side is that early diagnosis and intervention, especially through Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), can make a significant difference in a child’s development and quality of life.

At True Progress Therapy, we provide personalized ABA therapy in New Jersey, helping children with autism thrive at every stage.
